De Tomaso Mangusta Electrical Repairs
Recently at Alficina, we had the pleasure of working on a De Tomaso Mangusta. This rather rare and striking Italian sports car has come in with some wiring faults, leading to the battery not charging. Our amazing and experienced staff were able to identify the issue and resolve it, getting it back to our client as soon as possible.
The De Tomaso Mangusta is a rear-wheel-drive sports car designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, first shown in 1966, and produced between 1967 and 1971. It is known for its striking gullwing doors, luxury interior, and powerful Ford V8 engine and was named after the Italian word for "mongoose," which is a natural enemy of the cobra. The design was innovative for its time, combining Italian elegance with American muscle. It features a low-slung profile, a centrally hinged "gullwing" hood, and a sleek, modern aesthetic. Initially, it was powered by a Ford V8 engine and featured a ZF 5-speed transaxle with a limited-slip differential. There were only 401 De Tomaso Mangusta’s ever produced.
The Tomaso Mangusta had a problem with the wiring; to solve this issue we ran an initial diagnosis to observe how the battery was running. We watched to see if the voltage of the battery increases when the De Tomaso is turned on compared to when it’s turned off. After identifying the issue we conducted a visual inspection of the alternator checking for loose corroded or broken connections. Additionally, we examine the wiring loom for any damage, age-related wear or previous poor repairs, particularly checking the main output wire from the alternator to the battery and testing to ensure there isn’t a fault with the alternator using a multimeter by making sure it's receiving power and ground.
After conducting these checks, we identify where in the circuit the voltage is being lost, replace any damaged wires, clean corroded terminals or re-route wiring as needed to restore a reliable connection. We confirm the alternator is getting its signal from the ignition and test the system after the repairs are carried out, checking the battery reaches the correct voltage.
