1968 Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti - 1300Nord Engine Rebuild

Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti

We endeavoured to rebuild the Nord 1300 engine for the Giulia Ti late 2022 and we proceeded by stripping all components and generating a pre build report to conclude why the engine was previously not performing. Following a meeting with its ’s custodian, Matt, we made a plan of action together and sprung into action. The first step of the engine rebuild was to aquablast all the aluminium components to check for any damage that might have occurred cured over the decades. A typical failure point that can spoil a Nord block is the surface at the bottom of the liners where coolant can deposit and decompose the surface. Luckily, in our case the block was perfectly serviceable. Another typical problem we encounter time and time again is the removal of the engine block studs where over the years the steel studs embed in the aluminium block and when it comes to their removal they snap. In our case, we snapped only two block studs and we entrusted our friendly machining company with the safe removal of the joints, cleaning the stud holes and finishing with metal inserts - never helicoil.

Following the precision machining for the cylinder head and engine block, the bottom end assembly was weight balanced and it was all refitted carefully with only the best components and after many hours of measuring and weight distribution. The oil pump was renewed with a high flow oil pump and hot cams were used in this build. The cylinder head suffered slight cut outs to allow more space for the cam lobes.
