Lancia Fulvia Series 2 – Post Purchase Recommissioning
The Lancia Fulvia, a 1970s Italian classic car, was recently purchased by our client in Italy and transported to the UK. The Lancia Fulvia is currently in our workshops for a post-purchase recommissioning. Similar to other classic cars, this Lancia needs a refresh and repairs to bring it back to a safe, reliable and enjoyable driving condition. Coming in three different body styles, Berlina, Coupe and Sport, this classic Italian car has marked its place in motorsports history, famously winning the 1972 Monte Carlo Rally. The Lancia Fulvia’s compact dimensions, sharp front-wheel-drive handling and V4 engine made it a popular choice amongst keen drivers, not just rally professionals.
This Lancia Fulvia is currently undergoing mechanical repairs at our workshops, including repairs on the brakes, suspension and steering. Older classic cars like the Lancia Fulvia often suffer from seized callipers, perished rubber hoses and corroded cylinders in the braking system if the vehicle has been dormant for a while. Repairing the braking system is crucial for the Fulvia, which has disk brakes all around, to ensure it stops efficiently and effectively. In addition, the suspension also needed some repairs; replacing worn bushes and tired dampers will help restore the Fulvia’s agile handling. Another mechanical element we are repairing on the Lancia Fulvia is the steering. One of the Fulvia’s trademarks is precise front-wheel-drive steering. After many years, joints can wear and can make the steering feel dull. Recommissioning can help bring the Fulvia’s character back to life.
The Lancia Fulvia Series 2, produced between 1970 to 1974, before Fiat took over in 1974 and produced the Series 3 model. The Series 2 featured several improvements over the original Series 1 model released in 1963. The Series 2 offers a wider track and a stronger bodyshell, which improved the Lancia’s handling and safety. In addition, a 5-speed gearbox was installed, which became a standard for many models, along with some tweaks to the suspension and bigger brakes. This bought the Lancia Fulvia in line with newer rivals whilst keeping the high-quality Lancia engineering flair, reaching a top speed of approximately 106mph.
Due to the Lancia’s special engineering, they often require specific tools and equipment to conduct repairs, along with specialist knowledge on Lancia. The narrow-angle V4 engine is unlike anything else; it’s compact with a single cylinder head shared across both banks, making it difficult to set up without the correct tools and knowledge. Additionally, the front-wheel-drive layout was advanced for its time and contributes to the Fulvia’s balance; however, this also means access for maintenance is tight compared to rear-wheel-drive contemporaries. In comparison to the Alfa Romeos produced during the same era, they used more conventional twin-cam inline-4 engines and rear-wheel drive layouts; therefore, they are easier for general workshops to service. With the correct tools available in our workshops, coupled with the vast wealth of knowledge and experience of our restoration technicians, we can repair this Lancia Fulvia to its former glory at Alficina.
