1969 DE TOMASO MANGUSTA

ELECTRICS

This rather rare and striking Italian sports car has come in with some wiring faults, leading to the battery not charging. To solve this issue we ran an initial diagnosis to observe how the battery was running. We watched to see if the voltage of the battery increases when the De Tomaso is turned on compared to when it’s turned off.

The choice of an American V8 certainly improved reliability, but other systems, such as electrics, are still prone to failures.

After identifying the issue we conducted a visual inspection of the alternator checking for loose corroded or broken connections. Additionally, we examine the wiring loom for any damage, age-related wear or previous poor repairs, particularly checking the main output wire from the alternator to the battery and testing to ensure there isn’t a fault with the alternator using a multimeter by making sure it's receiving power and ground.

After conducting these checks, we identify where in the circuit the voltage is being lost, replace any damaged wires, clean corroded terminals or re-route wiring as needed to restore a reliable connection. We confirm the alternator is getting its signal from the ignition and test the system after the repairs are carried out, checking the battery reaches the correct voltage.

Many customers come to us with wiring issues and this made us specialise in complete re-harnessing jobs, greatly improving reliability.
